South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley touts Zeus for its commitment to work skills testing

Specialty tubing company requires WorkKeys, math and reading skills test for all its operators

ORANGEBURG, SC- Zeus, a global leader in material science and high-performance polymer extrusions, was recognized by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley Monday for its support of WorkKeys, a pre-employment test for documenting and improving the basic math and reading skills of workers.

The recognition was part of the launch of the South Carolina Work Ready Communities initiative, a program that promotes the use of WorkKeys to match the skills of workers with available jobs. All new manufacturing professionals at Zeus must take WorkKeys and score proficient to be eligible to work at the specialty tubing manufacturer.

“Zeus believes strongly in ensuring and improving the work skills of all its employees,” said Zeus Chief Executive Officer John M. Worley, Jr. “WorkKeys is not just a good business practice; it also gives our employees a sense of pride about the work they perform and helps to improve the overall quality of the workforce in South Carolina.”

Developed by ACT, a national nonprofit known for its college readiness testing, WorkKeys provides a job skill evaluation based on results of three assessments: applied mathematics, locating information and reading for information. South Carolina was recently accepted into a pilot jobs project by ACT aimed at integrating the state’s various testing and training programs. Officials say the program will assess the skills of workers, and then fill the gaps.
