New
PEEK-based extrusion provides “shrink to
fit” layer of protection that is impervious
to extreme
environments.
ORANGEBURG,
S.C., February 16, 2006 - It’s considered
the highest performing thermoplastic material
due to its ability to withstand extreme
temperatures, intense pressure and caustic
fluids. Now Zeus, Inc., has taken PEEK,
a linear, semi-crystalline aromatic polymer,
to an entirely new level of performance
with the introduction of PEEKshrink™ heat-shrinkable
tubing. The new extrusion provides a “shrink
to fit” layer of protection for sensitive
wires and other components used in medical
devices, fluid handling systems, aeronautics
and automobiles, electronics, telecom hardware
and oil exploration equipment.
Positioned
as an alternative to traditional protective
coatings like fluoropolymers, PEEKshrink™
heat-shrinkable tubing is ideally suited
for challenging environments where extreme
heat or cold, intense pressure, chemicals,
water, or dielectric interference pose a
threat to wires and electrical components.
When shrunk onto components, PEEKshrink™
heat-shrinkable tubing forms an impenetrable
“second skin” that is impervious to contaminants,
preserving the integrity and performance
of whatever is inside. The polymer’s inherent
purity and lubricity make it an ideal choice
for analytical and life sciences applications.
Zeus’
experience with PEEK in terms of material
modification and extrusion has enabled the
company to elevate several key performance
attributes of PEEKshrink™ heat-shrinkable
tubing, giving design engineers more options,
says Zeus Director of Research and Development
Bob Ballard. “PEEK is a preferred polymer
for many high performance applications due
to its impervious nature and superior wear
resistance. By modifying the material and
extruding it in a heat shrinkable format,
it becomes very attractive in a new role
as a lightweight, super tough insulation
material. PEEKshrink™ has a continuous service
temperature of 400°C (752°F) (N.E.M.A. MW
1000) and a glass transition temperature
(Tg) 20°C (68°F) higher than regular PEEK. Its
superior lap sheer bond strength and abrasion
resistance makes it very attractive for
a wide range of medical and industrial
applications.”
Extensive
testing has resulted in highly reliable,
predictable shrink performance. PEEKshrink™
heat-shrinkable tubing has a shrink temperature
of 343°C to 385°C (650°F to 725°F). It has
a consistent shrink ratio of up to 1.2:1.
Zeus routinely
extrudes PEEKshrink™ heat-shrinkable tubing
in lengths up to 1,000 feet. It also is
available in standard straight length configurations
of four feet. Zeus’ precision extrusion
capabilities ensure consistent wall thicknesses.
There are no seams, weak points, or holes
that might compromise its protective capabilities.
PEEKshrink™
heat-shrinkable from Zeus has been commercialized
and is available on a global basis. It is
available in standard and customer-specific
configurations.
