Background
Tubing consisting of multiple layers is often referred to as
co-extruded tubing or co-extrusions. Zeus commonly manufacturers co-extruded tubing with two or three (tri-extrusion) differing layers.
Co-Extrusion Uses
Co-extrusions are used in a wide range of applications requiring differing properties. For example, a thin FEP lined Polyethylene tubing used for ground water monitoring offers the purity of a fluoropolymer tubing to ensure accurate measurements plus the durability and cost effectiveness of a polyethylene jacket. The overall benefit is a reduced-cost high purity water sampling tube.

Other applications may include combinations of plastics that offer differing levels of gas or fluid barrier properties, varying flexibilities, conductive layers, chemical resistance needs, mechanical requirements or for cost reductions.

In the medical device market co-extrusions have become a popular way to adjust the properties of a tube through the combination of multiple layers of resins with different properties. Additional applications may require the differing of properties (such as lubricity and flexibility) on the I.D. and O.D. of the tube.
